For the past seven years, Mono Lake Boat Tours has been privileged to provide visitors to the region with informative and scenic boat tours on historic Mono Lake. Guests from around the world have been treated to a spectacular display of Mother Nature's handiwork. Join naturalist Tom Crowe as he provides an engaging interpretive Mono Lake boat tour. See the lake in an entirely new perspective as you view the tufa, volcanic craters and other unique geological features from the water. Observe wildlife and learn the natural history of the lake. There are ample photographic opportunities. Be sure to bring along binoculars, camera, sunscreen, hat, windbreaker, drinking water and a smile. The boat tour starts at historic Tioga Lodge on the west shore line of Mono Lake. The private dock at the resort first served as a launching point for Mono Lake boat tours in the 1920s. Today, Tioga Lodge offers comfortable accommodations and a full service restaurant for visitors to the Mono Basin National Scenic area. The natural history tours of Mono Lake will examine the biology and geology of the oldest living lake in North America. Access to the Pahoa Island and Negit Island is allowed after the sea gull nesting season ends at the beginning of August. You have an opportunity to learn about the unique ecosystem of this salty, alkaline lake and the life cycles of the creatures that inhabit its waters. The tours will demonstrate first hand the growing Tufa formations in the lake and explain the dramatic volcanic events that created the islands in the lake and volcanic formations on its north and south sides. We will be passing close to many different bird species including osprey nesting on Tufa towers. Most of the birds feed on the brine shrimp and alakali flies that inhabit the lake. BRING YOUR BINOCULARS! Tours can be directed to the particular places on the lake that clients request. Tours generally take place in the morning hours when the lake is calm and the first tour leaves by 8:30 AM. Tours will be at least 2 hours in length and may last longer depending on the areas that we explore. As weather conditions permit, we can offer as many as three tours per day, seven days a week. Discounts are available for locals, groups and families.
